Weekly Reports from Angel of the North Fishing Lakes
Weekly report for 29 June 2008
Fishing on all lakes is cracking the best of the year with all species spawned and feeding up again to gain strength and stature. Young fingerlings spawned in early May showing in shoals getting chased by fish. Feed patterns getting and keeping the hungry fish in your swim, feed more and often now the water temperature is up, and with larger baits you catch larger fish. Waggler or pole close by reeds at about 3ft or go off the 2nd shelf at 6ft deep, keep a swim fed at 6 meters out if fishing close in, pole or feeder to the back bank again close in all producing well. Keep 2 /3 swims fed to keep the fish feeding in at least one swim, then if swim dries up switch to your second or third swim and feed the first. Just keeping a constant rotation as each swim dies off .
Bowes Lake
Choose pegs well according to wind and you will have a large haul of fish, Jimmy Hagan produced a great 6lb 8oz young carp as well as 67 others average weight 2lb 8oz.
Chris Abbott fishing Peg 1 took a fish a chuck on Saturday and his reasoning is it is all in getting the feed patterns correct.

Monday Norman Eden catch on peg 16 aa his daily quota of 100 fish when he then goes home including 11 tench to 5lb, 2 golden tench to 2lb loads of skimmers and mixed silvers all on soft hookers with garlic flavouring

Weekly report for 20 April 2008
General A week of Ground frosts, rain, wind swinging to Northerly and North Easterly, to Easterly not wind directions for productive angling! But the weather is forecast to change at last in the week ahead !! Water temperatures have varied up and down again, but daylight longer hours are getting fish to start feeding as spawning is due to start so they need to get weigh on and fit for spawning. Catches have been methodical with a good tench of 8lb a male and large bags of golden tench, carp have been very prevalent on a good selection of baits, some extremely good Rudd, Roach, Ide and Orfe being caught to around 2lb, Bream to 7lb and Skimmers in large numbers, no Crucians, or Perch reported caught this week. Feed angel pellets or maggots, or chop caster or maggots mixed with groundbait or pellet, hook baits that are working are pellet, hair rigged angel pellets both RS 4.5 , 6 & 10mm, sweetcorn, worm, caster, however maggot being the best with water temp drop. Methods – tip and maggot feeder doing the job, good days with little wind pole excels.
Bowes Lake
With the water temp drop and wind changing direction to N & NE it has been critical to choose your peg wisely to get good catches, some catch rates of 60 plus carp in half day sessions have been possible,.
Dave Hodgson had 10 carp for 44lb, good average weight of 4lb 4oz per carp. Strangely almost all carp caught were commons, depending on bait and peg choice were the key to size of the carp caught.
Jimmy Hagan had a good day on Sunday with 21 carp to 5lb on maggot feeder and worm tails on hook.
Start using larger hook baits or multiple maggots, feed angel feed pellets or maggots to get carp into your swim.
Lookout Lake
Stev Shilling had a good 3 hour session on the island peg 15 with 25 carp and 2 tench all good fish on pole, 3 meters out on hook 6 mm pellet over 6mm feed pellet.
Paul and Eddie Burton from Peterlee had a good but very wet session on Wednesday with Carp to 4lb, Tench, an excellent golden Orfe of 2lb plus, Ide, Lovely large Bream, and Skimmers, Rudd & Roach on pellet and maggot.
Bassetts Pond
Great pond steady catches even though wind direction has been bad for angling N NE & E and water temp drops & Rises, some good numbers of smaller fish under 1lb and quite a few well above 4lb including some excellent carp, Ide, Rudd to over 1lb, Roach, Tench, Golden Tench, Skimmers,Golden Orfe.all catching this week.

Fisheries Accreditations
We are exceptionally Proud to announce we were awarded the top accreditation a fishery can get of a GOLD award.
The Stillwater Fisheries Accreditation
Scheme
CRITERIA: The criteria for meeting the accreditation standard are based on eight
assessment areas, focusing on different aspects of the fishery. These are habitat,
nutrition, stocking, water quality, fish health, predation stress, competition angling and
exploitation rates.
Each of these aspects is carefully assessed and an action is agreed with the fishery to
either improve or maintain standards.
Physical Habitat: The habitat of stillwaters should be as natural and diverse as
possible and include: submerged water plants; emergent and marginal vegetation;
overhanging trees and bushes; wood in margins and sunk in deep water (out of fishing
range) for added cover; deep water (>2m) to provide sanctuary for temperature
extremes; shallow water for spawning and as fry habitat.
Nutrition: Plant presence in the margins, bait and fish diet, over/under feeding of the
fish are all assessed.
Stocking: The assessment encompasses species suitability to the habitat, the
stocking policy of the fishery and compliance with legislation and bio-security.
Water Quality: Water quality criteria to be considered include dissolved oxygen
content, ammonia concentrations and aeration techniques, monitoring and record
keeping.
Fish Health: This section covers bio-security measures, species suitability, stock
introduction and water quality monitoring.
Predation Stress: The fishery must provide adequate cover and refuge for fish from
avian, mammalian and other fish predators.
Competition Angling: It will be necessary to have a competition policy in place, if
appropriate, covering the equipment in use and other fish-related welfare matters.
Exploitation Rates: The fishery owner or manager must be able to make good
estimates of exploitation rates based on records of angler visits, stock density and
average catches. This will help in assessing standards based on good record keeping.
Securing fish welfare by raising fishery standards
Weekly report for 16 March 2008
Some excellent catches considering weather conditions demonstrating some excellent angling skills, fish moving according to wind conditions and sheltering in calmer waters behind islands, around & below features to keep in warmer thermals Water temperatures have held well this week in the 6 deg range, however very low barometer pressure and gales with high gusts up to 65mph making fishing very, very difficult, with presentation out the question. Winds then turning to come from North and North East making fish feed the least and going forth,. Choose your pegs Daily according to weather, winds and barometer pressure there is a need to feed several swims to catch well. Fish feeding later on in the day on bright days through Water colouring. Maggot, corn, pellet, caster, worm working on hook, maggot feeders, and angel pellets as feed working in small quantities.
Bowes Lake
Choice of peg and method of fishing has been critical this week, as fish are moving around although they are very tight to margins both on the bankside or islands, normally around 6 ft deep and at end of second marginal shelf about 4 ft out.
Best bags were 39 fish by season ticket holder Ian Dixon with an average size of 4 lb his best fish on this session was 8lb common. Jim Nicholson from Newcastle took a lovely 26lb 10oz mirror a female on korum maggot clip, he also had sixteen smaller on maggot clip and pellet hair rigged flavoured with garlic, all in an evening after work session.
Anthony Longstaff 15 yrs old from Sunderland on Friday caught 21 carp to 3lb in just 5 hours fishing up the channel on maggot feeder.
Lookout Lake

Fish off the second shelf at 4 ft out and 6ft deep both in margins and of back banks and island.
Tench, Golden Tench, Rudd, Golden Rudd, Orfe, Ide, Skimmers, Bream, Crucians, Perch, Roach also Carp all feeding and catching.
